Ebola vaccine contains no virus, Health Minister says

The Health Minister Alex Segbefia has today assured the public that the Ebola vaccine which was being trialled contains no virus.
Mr Segbefia said this when he appeared before Parliament today to answer questions over attempts to carry out an Ebola vaccine trial in the country.
The government of Ghana had agreed with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other stakeholders to embark on the vaccines trial in Hohoe in the Volta region, but was met with stiff opposition from pressure groups after the news broke.
“Guinea pigs”
Ghanaians have raised concerns about the trial, fearing the disease could spread throughout the country if anyone is infected. Officials have however served notice that the exercise is not harmful.
The Health Minister ordered the suspension of the exercise after complaints that locals were being needlessly used as “guinea pigs”.
Ghana had agreed to join other countries in hosting trials to test the safety and effects of two experimental vaccines against a virus that has killed more than 11,150 people in the region.

Phase 1 safety tests for one vaccine, developed by US pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson and Denmark’s Bavarian Nordic in the southeastern Volta region, gave volunteers a mobile phone and nearly Ghc 20 each.
