Some market traders at the Nana Efia Kobi (Abinchi) market in Kumasi claim that excessive use of agrochemicals by farmers is affecting the shelf life of produce.
Speaking to Kessben TV, the vexed women explained that the foodstuffs they sell rots quickly due to the chemicals used by farmers.
Responding to this, Mr Kwame Agyemang vice chairman of the Ghana Importers Association of Agrochemicals, said that agrochemicals are not the cause early decay of foodstuffs per se, but their improper use may be a factor.
Mr Agyemang added: “The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ensures the importation of environmentally safe chemicals for plant growing.
“Several educational workshops have been held for farmers on the right usage of agrochemicals but the farmers fail to adhere to this instructions and in turn use the chemicals above the required measurements thereby affecting the quality of the foodstuffs.”
He added that his organisation would continue to do all they could to educate farmers.
