Gbawe, Awoshie and surrounding areas flooded
Several persons living within the Gbawe and Awoshie townships in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region have been forced to abandon their homes after flood waters hit on Monday.
An eyewitness, Edmund Osei-Boakye, told Citi News the areas surrounding Mallam Junction and an area popularly known as ‘Guiness Road’ are the worst affected.
According to him, several persons are wading through the knee-deep waters have evacuated their homes and are seeking alternative shelter.
Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Sherry, also reported that the bridge connecting the Odorgonor Secondary School to ‘Onyinase main’ (a suburd of the Gbawe), has been washed away.
He noted the some unknown persons are taking advantage of the situation to extract money from locals who attempt to cross the waterways by charging 50 pesewas per trip.
Gbawe is the twenty-third largest settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 74,403 people according to the 2010 Population Census.
