A Sunyani High Court has ordered a recount of votes of the Sunyani East constituency primaries of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The ruling follows a suit brought against the Electoral Commission by an aggrieved contestant who lost the election by a single vote.
George Kumi, former Ghana Ambassador to Libya and High Commissioner to Nigeria in the Kufuor administration, had a total of 387 votes, losing to the incumbent, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, who had 388 votes in the keenly contested election. There were two rejected ballots.
In a letter to the Electoral Commission before proceeding to the court, Mr Kumi said: “I wish to petition your office for a recount of ballots of the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries for Sunyani East Constituency which took place on Saturday, 13th June, 2015.
“In addition, I ask that the Electoral Commission conduct a forensic audit of the ballots to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing ballot i.e. to know the serial number of that particular ballot.
“Sir, I request the ballot box is handed over to the Regional Police Command for safe keeping within twenty-four hours upon receipt of this petition”.
The primaries of the opposition party were held on June 13 this year.
