28,000 teachers still await promotion arrears after Gov’t pays 52,000

The government has paid promotion salary arrears to 52,000 teachers, while payments for another 28,000 remain outstanding, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed.

The Minister explained that the 52,000 teachers had successfully completed the validation process, out of approximately 80,000 applicants seeking payment of their promotion arrears.

Hon Iddrisu appealed to the affected teachers to refrain from embarking on another strike, assuring them that efforts were underway to address their concerns.

He said the government had settled the arrears for the 52,000 teachers by October 16, adding that the outstanding cases included some non-teaching staff and individuals whose validation processes had not been completed.

Mr Iddrisu further disclosed that he had reached out to the leadership of the teacher unions to arrange an emergency meeting to discuss the outstanding payments.

According to him, the government is working towards ensuring that all eligible teachers receive their promotion salary arrears by the end of November.
