NPP Canada Branch Demands Accountability and Resignation of Foreign Minister Over Evacuation, Galamsey Issues

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Canada Branch has called on Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to provide full accountability on the recent evacuation of Ghanaians in South Africa and to resign if he fails to do so.

In a press statement dated 26th October 2026 and issued by its Communications Directorate, the branch said its concerns follow the Minister’s recent visit to Ottawa, Canada, during which some NPP supporters sought answers on matters of public accountability.

“Peaceful demands for transparency must be met with facts, not dismissed as partisan noise,” the statement signed by Communications Officer Felix Appiah-Korang said.

The NPP Canada Branch raised concerns about the evacuation exercise involving Ghanaians in South Africa, citing allegations of missing names and approximately GH¢16 million said to be unaccounted for.

Describing the allegations as serious claims requiring independent verification, the group called on the Minister to publish a full beneficiary list, expenditure breakdown, procurement records and a clear reconciliation of all public funds involved.

The statement also asked the Minister to address his past public statements made while in opposition, including a reported pledge to resign if his government hired a private jet.

“Ghanaians deserve a clear explanation of whether that commitment remains his position and how it squares with the government’s present conduct,” it stated.

On illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, the branch noted that the Minister had previously criticized the NPP administration over water pollution and promised better outcomes under his party. It said continuing reports of polluted water bodies and serious public-health risks now demand measurable results and an honest account of what has changed.

“Public office requires consistency, integrity and accountability. We therefore call on the Foreign Minister to respond comprehensively to these questions, facilitate an independent examination of the financial allegations and accept political responsibility. In our view, failure to provide a credible public accounting should be followed by his resignation,” the statement said.

The NPP Canada Branch said it remains committed to lawful, peaceful civic engagement and evidence-based scrutiny of all public officials.

“Our demand is simple: transparency, accountability and respect for the Ghanaian people,” it added.
