Improved DStv packages continue to deliver value-Sam George
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, says the improved DStv packages negotiated with MultiChoice Ghana continue to deliver value to subscribers nearly a year after their introduction.
According to the Minister, the enhanced packages introduced in October 2025 remain in force, despite earlier claims that the benefits secured through the government’s intervention would last for only three months.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series, Mr George said government stepped in after growing concerns from Ghanaians over the affordability of pay-TV services.
He explained that he established and chaired a stakeholder committee comprising the Ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Ghana and the Cybersecurity Authority to engage the company on concerns raised by consumers.
The engagements, he said, resulted in improved DStv packages being introduced in October 2025, with the benefits sustained since then.
«“Those improved packages remain in force despite the allegations that they were for only three months. Value has been sustained. Ghanaian households have kept the benefits of that negotiation, and that’s what accountability looks like—a promise made and a promise kept,” he said.»
Hon.Sam George said the intervention was part of government’s broader efforts to ease the financial burden on households while ensuring that consumers receive better value for digital services.
He noted that the ministry had adopted a similar approach in the telecommunications sector by engaging mobile network operators on the cost and value of data services.
According to him, MTN increased data volumes on its bundles by 15 percent, while AirtelTigo and Telecel increased their bundle volumes by 10 percent following engagements with the ministry in 2025.
The Minister further disclosed that engagements with the telecommunications industry in 2026 had contributed to significant reductions in fixed broadband prices.
He cited MTN’s unlimited 800Mbps fibre broadband package, whose monthly price was reduced by about 70 percent, from GH¢987 to GH¢299.
He added that Telecel had also revised its fixed data prices, resulting in reductions for customers.
Mr George stressed that the ministry would continue to advocate for consumers and engage regulators and service providers to improve affordability, access and value in Ghana’s digital services sector.
He said government remained committed to ensuring that consumers benefit from meaningful improvements in the services for which they pay.
