Nimako urges NPP executives to reconcile defeated candidates
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says its newly elected regional executives must prioritise reconciliation and bring defeated candidates into the party’s structures as it begins preparations for the 2028 general election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says its newly elected regional executives must prioritise reconciliation and bring defeated candidates into the party’s structures as it begins preparations for the 2028 general election.
NPP Director of Elections and Research Evans Nimako said the party’s internal elections were now behind it and the focus should shift to rebuilding the party and supporting its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (17 August), Nimako said the party’s constitution provided mechanisms for integrating contestants and their supporters after internal elections.
He noted that newly elected regional executives had 14 days after their election to consult the National Party on appointments to their executive structures.
“Our constitution says that 14 days after the election of these people, they have the right, the mandate, to consult with the National Party to do appointing,” he said.
Nimako said the appointment process provided an opportunity for the new executives to bring defeated candidates and other party members into the leadership structures.
He said this would be important in strengthening unity as the party prepares for the next general election.
“The party has the mechanism to bring everyone on board, as in building reconciliation, ensuring that we have the needed unity to work together and support our presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said.
His comments come after a largely peaceful regional election in which several new chairpersons were elected while some incumbents retained their positions.
Some contests were decided by narrow margins, including the Savannah Regional chairmanship, which was decided by four votes.
Nimako said narrow victories should not become a source of division because the party’s internal structures provide avenues for reconciliation.
He said the NPP’s attention would now shift to completing its internal electoral process at the national level.
The party’s national conference is scheduled for October 3, after which the internal restructuring process will be completed.
Nimako said the party was also continuing consultations through sector committees and sub-committees working on various policy areas.
He expressed confidence that the party’s message would receive support from Ghanaians and said the NPP was working towards returning to government in 2028.
“The newly elected party, by God’s grace, is coming back to government. Dr Bawumia is forming government in January 2029,” he said.
