Ghana's first family escapes death in helicopter emergency landing

Ghana’s first family are safe and sound after a helicopter they were flying in from Sunyani en route to Kumasi embarked on “a precautionary landing” at Apatrapa – a suburb in Kumasi.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the incident and attributed the unplanned landing to “bad weather.”
The spokesperson of the GAF Lt. Col Aggrey Quarshie said “nothing happened to the helicopter and there was no injury. They were coming from Sunyani and made a precautionary landing due to bad weather. The First Family was later moved to Kumasi and brought back to Accra.”
According to reports, the helicopter landed about 100 metres away from the Apatrapa Government Hospital. The incident happened around 3.30 pm on Friday.
Mahama and his wife were en route to Kumasi Airport to board the presidential jet after returning from the funeral of Cecilia Johnson’s mother.
The Mahamas have since returned to Accra.
Meanwhile the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement saying “while approaching Kumasi, a sudden storm with high winds closed in”.
As a precaution and in line with safety procedures, the helicopter crew landed safely on an open field.
The first couple was evacuated by officers of the Central Command to the residency in Kumasi.
