Nana B Reacts to Camilla Alhassan’s Sentencing: Raises Legal Concerns

Former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, has raised concerns over how the case involving TikToker Camilla Alhassan was handled after she was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news.

In a statement, Nana B said Camilla was arrested on July 9 and brought before a court without the benefit of legal representation or family support, which he claims led her to enter a guilty plea without proper legal guidance. He further alleged that by the time her family and lawyers traced her to the Spintex Police Station, she had suffered physical assault, a claim he said was acknowledged in the presence of a senior police officer.

Nana B explained that Camilla’s legal team filed an application on July 13 requesting that her plea be retaken so the matter could proceed to a full trial, with the application scheduled to be heard on July 23. He claimed, however, that when Camilla later appeared before the Circuit Court, the presiding judge went ahead to pronounce a one-year sentence without addressing the pending application. He noted that the judge did not acknowledge that the application seeking a retake of her plea was still outstanding.

Nana B described the situation as a troubling issue for freedom of speech, accusing the government of deploying law enforcement against its critics. He added that Camilla’s legal team is now preparing to challenge both the conviction and the sentence on appeal.
