Politicians Care More About Their Pockets Than Citizens – Trade Advocate Slams leaders

President of the Trade Advocacy Group, David Amoateng, has launched a scathing attack on Ghana’s political class, accusing politicians of prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Speaking on the state of governance and the rising cost of living on Kessben TV’s Digest show, Amoateng argued that citizens who believe politicians are genuinely concerned about their welfare are “deceiving themselves.”
“Anyone who thinks our politicians are mindful of the citizens might be deceiving himself,” he stated.
According to him, many politicians are more focused on enriching themselves and securing future electoral victories than addressing the economic hardships facing Ghanaians.
“Our politicians are only interested in their pockets and the next election,” he alleged.
Amoateng also criticized the sharp increase in utility costs, drawing comparisons between previous and current tariff levels. He recalled that when duties of clearing one container were around GH¢80,000 under former President Akufo Addo’s administration, critics described the charges as outrageous.
However, he noted that duties for same consignment have risen significantly in recent years.
“When we were paying GH¢80,000, to clear one container, President Mahama said it was outrageous. But now, under his watch, we are paying over GH¢180,000,” he claimed.
His remarks add to the growing public debate over the rising cost of freight and the broader economic pressures confronting households and businesses across the country.
The comments are also likely to fuel renewed discussions about accountability and the responsiveness of political leaders to the concerns of citizens.
