Ga North Assembly Clears Air on Pokuase Interchange Toilet Project, Says It’s Not Under the Bridge

The Ga North Municipal Assembly has denied claims that it is constructing a public toilet facility under the Pokuase Interchange, saying the project is being executed at an approved location in line with planning regulations.

In a rejoinder issued on Sunday and signed by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Joseph K. Armah, the Assembly said the facility is an Assembly initiative and not a private project as alleged in recent publications and social media discussions.

Wrong Location Caused 6-Month Delay
According to the Assembly, the main reason for the delay was that the contractor started construction at the wrong site.

“The initial delay in the execution of the project resulted from the contractor commencing construction at an incorrect location, contrary to the approved site identified for the project,” the statement said.

Upon inspection, the Assembly said it intervened and stopped the unauthorized structure to “safeguard public infrastructure and ensure compliance with the approved project plans.”

The project was then stalled for approximately six months while administrative and technical processes were completed to identify and allocate the correct site.

Work to Resume at Approved Site
The Assembly confirmed that the contractor has now been officially handed the approved site and is expected to proceed with construction according to the approved design and specifications.

“The Ga North Municipal Assembly remains committed to ensuring that all public infrastructure projects are executed in accordance with laid-down planning regulations and in the best interest of the public,” the statement added.

The Assembly urged the public to “disregard any misinformation suggesting that the Assembly sited the toilet project under the interchange.”

It also thanked residents for their patience and assured them that the toilet facility will be completed at the approved location for the benefit of commuters and the surrounding community.

The Pokuase Interchange, one of the busiest in Accra, has long been identified as needing proper sanitation facilities for traders, drivers, and commuters.
