President Mahama Will Soon Appoint Substantive Defence Minister – MP discloses

By Maurice Otoo

Member of Parliament for Amando East and Ranking member of the Interior and Defense Committee, Hon. Nicholas Amankwaa, has assured Ghanaians that President John Dramani Mahama will soon appoint a substantive Defense Minister despite the current vacancy at the ministry.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s Digest show in Accra, the committee member explained that several countries around the world do not necessarily have a Defense Ministry in the traditional sense, as various agencies often handle defense-related responsibilities.

According to him, Ghana’s governance structure chose to establish a ministry specifically responsible for defense matters, stressing that the absence of a substantive minister does not mean the sector has been abandoned.
He noted that after the demise of the sector minister, Omane Boamah, caretaker minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, together with the deputy minister and other relevant security agencies, have remained actively in charge of the country’s security operations.
“The security of the country is still intact. The President is not in a hurry to appoint just anybody, but he will definitely appoint a substantive minister for defense in due course,” he stated.

Hon. Nicholas further reassured the public that Ghana remains safe and secure, adding that the government will take the necessary steps to strengthen the defense sector.
“Ghana is still safe in defense aspects, and the government will definitely do the needful,” he added.
