IGP Yohuno Declares War On Armed Robbery: Police Arrest Killers of Missing Couple, Foil Labone Bank Robbery, Seize 11 AK-47 Rifles In Major Nationwide Operations

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced seven major breakthroughs recorded by the Ghana Police Service in recent intelligence-led operations targeting armed robbery networks across the country.

Addressing a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters on Monday, September 7, 2026, the IGP said the operations were the result of months of painstaking monitoring and intelligence gathering on criminal gangs in the Western, Northern, Savannah, Greater Accra and other regions.

“As I promised the good people of this country, my team and I remain committed to taking the fight to the criminals and making life uncomfortable for criminal syndicates,” Mr. Yohuno said. “I deployed special intelligence teams to these areas and worked with the various Regional Police Commands to undertake a number of targeted operations. I am happy to announce that all these operations proved successful.”

He commended officers for their dedication and thanked President John Dramani Mahama and the government for logistical support, particularly the provision of armoured pick-ups, which he said have been instrumental to the successes.

Here are the seven major cases as presented by the IGP:

1. Suspect Arrested For Murder of Missing Couple – Dr. Jesse Amuah and Wife

Police have arrested 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.

According to the IGP, investigations led police to suspect foul play. Searches at their residence and other locations they were believed to have visited, coupled with information from family members, led to the recovery of their mortal remains, which have been conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Investigations established that Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, murdered them, stole their mobile phones, money and private vehicle, and fled to the United Arab Emirates.

He was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice. On August 30, 2026, he was deported from Dubai to Ghana by a team of investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the murder. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue,” the IGP said.

2. Labone Bank Robbery Foiled; Two Robbers Shot Dead

In a major foiling of a planned bank robbery in Accra, officers from the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA) shot and killed two suspected robbers at Labone last month, arrested one and one escaped.

The IGP said his attention was drawn in April 2026 to complaints from bank customers in Greater Accra who were being monitored after withdrawing money, with criminals using master keys to open their vehicles.

He tasked the SOA to mount surveillance on various banks in Greater Accra and Tema.

On May 17, 2026, the gang robbed a woman of GH¢50,000 after she withdrew money from a bank in Tema Community 2. On June 9 and 11, 2026, they were spotted in a Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Tucson. On June 11, they attacked a young man at gunpoint at Achimota.

On August 13, 2026, the surveillance team received information that the gang had been spotted at a bank on Spintex Road heading towards Labone and Cantonments. The team monitored a black Hyundai Tucson with registration GS 7915-19 and an ash Toyota Highlander with registration GS 1434-18. Intelligence indicated the gang leaders, Harrison Chinedu and Dan, were armed with pistols.

They positioned themselves strategically between Zenith and GCB Banks as well as Ecobank at Labone to launch an attack, but police responded swiftly.

A search in the Toyota Highlander led to the retrieval of thirteen (13) different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 Pistol. Police say the suspects bring vehicles from Nigeria and change Nigerian plates to Ghanaian plates to commit crimes.

49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi has been arrested and remanded by the court.

3. Wassa Akropong Robbery Gang Dismantled; 3 AK-47s, 357 Rounds Recovered

Through sustained operations between August and September 4, 2026, police dismantled a robbery gang that targeted gold dealers, mining sites and communities across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.

Five suspects were arrested, one suspect died during the operation, and police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles.

Suspects include Clinton Mawuli, 33, Richmond Mensah alias Master Abey, Daniel Sarfo alias Abedi, Prince Duker, and Seidu Salifu, 40, who was linked to other robberies at Sakam near Offinso and was standing trial at Nsuta Circuit Court for robbery of gold bullion at Offinso Abofour in July 2025.

In a related operation on August 21, 2026, the Western Regional Command arrested five suspects for the robbery and murder of 40-year-old gold buyer Seth Kobina at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta. Suspects arrested are Amponsah, Christopher Seyiri alias “Cross and Die”, 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; and Thomas Odoom alias “Wale”, 30, and Isaac Quayeson alias “Last Burial” arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in Western North. Two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses were retrieved.

4. Three Arrested for Buipe, Tamale and Mion Robberies

The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate arrested three suspects for a series of armed robberies in Buipe, Tamale and Mion. The gang is believed to operate with two AK-47 rifles and one pump-action gun along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road and sold stolen motorbikes in Tamale and Savelugu.

Suspects Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias Saaga are also responsible for the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso near Damongo junction earlier in 2026. They are in custody.

5. Mastermind of Buipe Cattle Market Robbery Dies During Police Operation

Police have announced the death of Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, 60, the alleged mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder.

On June 29, 2026, two mobile money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market in Savannah Region were attacked and GH¢430,000 robbed.

Initial investigations led to the arrest of Yacouba Oumar, 28, and retrieval of one pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and one single barrel gun.

On September 5, 2026, the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters received intelligence on Beliko’s whereabouts. He was a trader in the market who allegedly contracted robbers and supplied them weapons to attack persons carrying large sums.

“The suspect who attempted to escape got shot and later died from gunshot wounds,” the IGP said. Intelligence operations have been intensified in the area.

6. Gang Leader, His Mother and Weapons Supplier Arrested for Accra-Kumasi Highway Robbery

Police have arrested the leader of the gang behind the highway robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway on August 18, 2026.

Suspects arrested are Obotan, the gang leader; his biological mother who concealed the weapon in her house; Issaka Napson, the weapons supplier; Issaka Majeed; and Majeed Huzeifa. A 14-year-old juvenile who served as lookout was also arrested.

Exhibits retrieved include one ADLER pump-action gun (Serial No. 23GN-2302), one double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, two AA cartridges, one locally manufactured pistol, three cutlasses, two pairs of handcuffs, two jack knives, one canister of pepper spray, one pinch bar, one ammunition pouch, one tactical vest, and one unregistered Royal 125 motorbike. Efforts are ongoing to arrest remaining suspect Tanko.

7. Five Arrested For Trading In Weapons; 8 AK-47s Retrieved

Between June and July 2026, the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP arrested five suspects for trading in weapons and retrieved eight AK-47 assault rifles, one SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.

Suspects are Munkaila Yusif alias Karyima, 34; Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, 32; Abdallah Imrana Gomda, 43; Sualesu Sheriffa, 20; and Ibrahim Adams alias Ibru, 35. They have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court. The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The IGP urged the public to volunteer credible information on suspects at large via the nearest police station or emergency line 191, assuring confidentiality.

“Let me once again make it clear to all criminals out there; the Ghana Police Service under my leadership will sustain these; and no matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” he warned.
