Korle-Bu Lab Scientists Reject “Unfounded” Criticism, Demand Reinstatement of Head and Administrative Reforms

The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has condemned remarks by the Chairman of the Korle-Bu Doctors Association, Dr. Asare Offei, describing his comments on the hospital’s Central Laboratory as damaging to public trust and unfair to laboratory staff.

In a press release issued Wednesday, MELPWU said Dr. Offei’s statements during a media interview — that results from the Central Laboratory “do not make sense” and “cannot be trusted” — caused anxiety among patients and undermined confidence in healthcare delivery.

The union welcomed a subsequent statement from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital management affirming that the Central Laboratory is “scientifically sound and internationally accredited,” staffed by qualified professionals, and operates under ISO 15189:2022 standards. MELPWU stressed that laboratory accuracy depends on scientific systems and validated procedures, not on the professional titles of physicians.

Unresolved Issues Behind the Impasse
Despite the clarification, the union said the core issues triggering the dispute remain unresolved. These include:
1. The alleged unlawful removal of the Head of Department, Dr. Michael Amo-Omari.
2. The imposition of what it calls “irregular administrative structures” within the Central Laboratory.
3. Attempts to undermine the autonomy and leadership of Medical Laboratory Scientists.

MELPWU noted that the Ministry of Health has set up a Three-Member Technical Review Committee, as confirmed in a letter dated May 5, 2026, to facilitate a resolution.

Union’s Demands
The union is demanding:
– The immediate reinstatement of Dr. Amo-Omari as Head of Department.
– A clear leadership structure for laboratory services and a separate regulatory framework to coordinate the medical laboratory profession in Ghana.
– Administrative action against the Board Chairman Prof. Titus Beyuo, KBTH CEO Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, the Director of Medical Affairs, the HR Director, and Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, over alleged conflict of interest and conduct fueling instability.

MELPWU said its strike ultimatum remains in force and urged all parties to exercise restraint and professionalism in public discourse.

“Collaboration among healthcare professionals must exist without domination, interference, or professional overreach,” the statement read.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to delivering accurate and timely diagnostic services and said it remains open to constructive engagement for a lawful and lasting resolution.

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital management has not issued further comments beyond its earlier affirmation of the laboratory’s accreditation and standards.
