Questions raised over legality of Accra Karnival activities

Concerns have been raised about the legality of certain activities during the recent Karnival held in Accra, with social commentator Wofa Kofi Appiah questioning whether due process was followed.
Speaking on Kessben Maakye Wofa Kofi Appiah argued that Ghanaian laws prohibit public nudity and indecent exposure, and therefore organizers of the event should clarify whether they obtained the necessary permits and security arrangements.
“Ghana’s laws do not allow a person to walk naked in public, so were the appropriate permissions secured? Did the police provide escort for this event?” he asked.
His comments follow public debate over scenes from the Karnival, where some participants were perceived to be dressed in ways critics consider inappropriate within the Ghanaian cultural and legal context.
While some supporters of the event argue that it promotes tourism and entertainment, others insist that such activities must strictly adhere to national laws and cultural norms. Observers say the involvement of the Ghana Police Service in providing security for large public gatherings typically requires prior approval and coordination.
