The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has recorded progress in ongoing reclamation works at degraded mining sites at Apedwa and Akyem Muoso in the Eastern Region.
The follow-up inspection follows earlier enforcement action at the two sites that led to the arrest of two suspects for illegal mining.
80% Restored At Apedwa, River Bonemaa Showing Improvement
According to NAIMOS, reclamation at Apedwa has advanced substantially, with about 80 per cent of the degraded area restored. Work is continuing towards full completion.
At Akyem Muoso, reclamation has also commenced, though progress is comparatively slower. The suspect in that case requested additional time to complete the work, citing delays arising from his earlier detention.
The Secretariat also reported significant improvement in the affected portion of the River Bonemaa, where restoration works are nearing completion.
“NAIMOS will continue to monitor the areas to ensure that the restoration works are fully completed and meet the required environmental standards,” the Secretariat stated.
Enforcement Plus Restoration
The follow-up inspection forms part of NAIMOS’ broader strategy of combining enforcement action with environmental restoration to ensure that those responsible for degrading land and water bodies remedy the damage caused.
The Secretariat has in recent months intensified operations across mining hotspots, enforcing the ban on illegal mining while compelling offenders to reclaim degraded lands and polluted water bodies.
