Courts have been awarding damages to patients for medical negligence at hospitals – Lawyer Isaac Ofori Gyeabour, Patient rights activist

A legal practitioner and patient rights advocate has indicated that Ghanaian courts are increasingly holding healthcare providers accountable for negligence, awarding damages to affected patients.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Isaac Ofori Gyeabour stated that victims of medical negligence have successfully pursued legal action against some hospitals, resulting in compensation for harm suffered.

According to him, the rulings reflect a growing recognition of patient rights within the country’s legal system, as well as a willingness by the courts to enforce standards of care in healthcare delivery.

He explained that cases of negligence, ranging from misdiagnosis to delays in treatment, can have serious consequences, and the law provides avenues for redress when patients or their families can prove wrongdoing.

Ofori Gyeabour also encouraged the public to be more aware of their rights when seeking medical care, noting that legal remedies exist for those who experience substandard treatment.
