The Chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transportation Committee, Hon. Israel Agyei Mensah, has underscored the strategic importance of the Ashanti Region in Ghana’s road infrastructure agenda, stressing that the region remains central to national development and connectivity.
Speaking on ongoing and proposed road projects at Kessben Maakye show, the Wassa East MP explained that although the Suame Interchange project was initiated by the previous administration, no dedicated funding was allocated for its construction.
According to him, the current government had to reassess priorities to ensure effective execution of major transport interventions.
Hon. Agyei Mensah revealed that an earlier proposal to integrate the project into the Big Push infrastructure agenda was reconsidered, as the initial design could have affected several private properties and was not adequately structured to address traffic congestion within the metropolis.
He noted that authorities have instead focused on developing outer ring roads as a more practical solution to ease traffic challenges in the area hence the proposed change from the supposed 4 tear to 3 tear interchange.
“The outer ring roads are expected to deal effectively with the traffic situation in the metropolis while reducing the impact on private properties,” he stated.
The lawmaker further emphasized that the Ashanti Region plays a crucial role in Ghana’s transportation system and deserves significant investment in road development.
He added that the planned projects will stand as a major legacy for the region and strengthen its role as a commercial and transit hub.
Hon. Agyei Mensah also disclosed that the proposed express road initiative is aimed at fast-tracking the movement of goods and services between key cities, boosting trade efficiency and improving travel time.
He described the project as a transformative step toward enhancing economic activity and connectivity across the country.
