The leading cases of women prisoners in Kumasi Central Prison are assault and snatching of boyfriend cases – Sergeant George Owusu

Public Relations Officer at the Ghana Prisons Service, Sergeant George Owusu, has revealed that the majority of cases involving female inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison are related to assault and relationship disputes.

Speaking on Kessben Drive with host Fante Quoo, Sergeant Owusu noted that many of the cases stem from domestic and interpersonal conflicts rather than organized or violent criminal activity.

He explained that among the most common offences recorded are assault-related incidents and what he described as “snatching of boyfriend” cases, reflecting disputes linked to romantic relationships.

According to him, these patterns highlight broader social issues that often escalate into legal trouble, leading to incarceration of some women at the facility.

The Ghana Prisons Service continues to emphasize rehabilitation and reintegration programmes aimed at reducing recidivism and helping inmates rebuild their lives after serving their sentences.
