Kwasi Mensah claims Asantes were the only indigenous people who fought colonial rule
Kwasi Mensah has claimed that Ghana’s independence was not the result of a direct struggle led by nationalists but rather a decision by colonial authorities to leave.
Speaking on the Maakye morning show on Kessben FM hosted by Wofa Kofi Appiah, Kwasi Mensah argued that the narrative surrounding Ghana’s independence needs to be reconsidered.
According to him, Ghana and its first president, Kwame Nkrumah, did not wage an armed struggle against the colonial government to secure independence. He claimed that it was the British colonial authorities who ultimately decided to grant independence.
Kwasi Mensah further stated that historically, the only indigenous group that fought direct wars against European colonial forces in the region were the Asantes. He referenced several conflicts between the Asante people and the British during the colonial era.
Ghana gained independence from United Kingdom on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from colonial rule. However, historians note that the independence movement involved both political activism and earlier resistance efforts by various groups across the country.
