NDC’s Baba Jamal pulled 10,884 votes to win Ayawaso east by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East by-election conducted on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, reclaiming the parliamentary seat for his party.

The poll was organized to fill the vacancy created by the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

Baba Jamal secured a decisive victory over his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as independent contenders. He garnered 10,884 votes, while Yusif Ali Baba polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda obtained 1,885 votes. Ibrahim Idrissu secured 43 votes, and Kanor David received 104 votes.

Out of 17,048 total ballots cast, 16,928 were deemed valid, with 120 rejected.

The results closely mirrored projections released prior to the election by research firm Global InfoAnalytics, which had forecast a commanding lead for the NDC candidate after conducting a constituency-wide survey. The poll, carried out between February 28 and March 1, predicted that Baba Jamal would capture about 75 percent of the vote, with Yusif Ali Baba trailing. The remaining candidates were projected to attract only minimal support.

The win reinforces the NDC’s dominance in Ayawaso East and marks Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament. He previously represented Akwatia as an MP and later served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The by-election was described as peaceful, though voter turnout was notably low across several polling stations. Electoral officials, supported by security personnel, maintained order throughout the exercise.

Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn in soon to represent the people of Ayawaso East and to continue the legislative duties left unfinished by the late Mahama Naser Toure.
