Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall as they continue their search for a long-term successor to Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils are monitoring the highly-rated 21-year-old following a turbulent period at St James’ Park, where the unexpected resignation of Eddie Howe has cast uncertainty over the club’s future. Reports suggest Hall is now open to leaving Newcastle after becoming frustrated with recent events both at club and international level.
United Target Long-Term Shaw Successor
Manchester United are keen to strengthen the left side of their defence ahead of the new season, with Luke Shaw entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.
Hall has emerged as one of the club’s preferred options thanks to his Premier League experience, versatility and long-term potential. The former Chelsea academy graduate enjoyed an impressive campaign for Newcastle but is now believed to be weighing up his future amid instability behind the scenes.
According to reports, the defender’s desire to leave has intensified following Eddie Howe’s resignation, which came shortly after Newcastle’s disappointing 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.
World Cup Disappointment Adds to Frustration
Hall’s frustration reportedly began before the managerial shake-up after he missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the recent FIFA World Cup.
During the closing stages of last season, Hall was asked to operate at right-back following an injury to Tino Livramento. While Livramento ultimately secured a place in England’s squad, Hall—despite already earning four senior international caps—was left out.
The young full-back is said to believe the positional switch affected his chances of making the tournament, leaving him disappointed after what had otherwise been a promising season.
His frustrations reportedly continued at club level after he was substituted at half-time during Newcastle’s defeat to Bournemouth in April before being named among the substitutes for the following two Premier League matches.
Newcastle Facing Major Squad Changes
Newcastle are expected to undergo significant changes this summer following Howe’s departure.
The Magpies have already allowed Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to leave in deals reportedly worth a combined £170 million, while midfielder Bruno Guimaraes continues to attract interest from Arsenal.
