IGP approves promotion for more than 12,000 Police personnel

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has sanctioned the promotion of 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, clearing a decade-long backlog of stalled advancements.
The promotions, which span ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, were confirmed by the IGP’s Secretariat.
According to the Secretariat, the exercise primarily involved administrative upgrades and special recommendations conducted in accordance with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).
The development follows allegations of nepotism surrounding the recent promotions. However, the Secretariat firmly dismissed the claims, maintaining that all procedures were carried out in strict adherence to due process.
It explained that commanders at the unit, district, divisional, and regional levels across the country’s 25 police regions were instructed to compile and submit the names of officers eligible for promotion.
Out of the total number promoted, about 11,900 junior-ranked officers advanced by one rank after serving beyond the required four-year period in their respective positions. Additionally, roughly 600 officers were elevated based on special recommendations.
The Secretariat further disclosed that it had received multiple petitions from officers who complained of delayed or unfair treatment regarding their promotions. Some of these cases involved officers who had been on interdiction for over five years but were subsequently acquitted and cleared of wrongdoing.
After reviewing the cases, the Police Administration granted the affected officers their rightful promotions.
The Service also considered petitions from families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, resulting in posthumous promotions for the deceased personnel.
