Randy Abbey takes an excess of GHC100,000 every month, and he’s telling cocoa farmers what? He should find money & pay them – Maxwell Ofusu Boakye

Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suame, has taken a strong public stance against Dr. Ransford Annetey “Randy” Abbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), over ongoing challenges with delayed payments to cocoa farmers.

Speaking on Kessben FM in a conversation with host Wofa Kofi Appiah, Ofosu Boakye criticised Dr. Abbey’s leadership, saying that while the COCOBOD boss reportedly earns in excess of GHC 100,000 per month, he has been ineffective in addressing the pressing issue of farmer payments. Ofosu Boakye questioned what Dr. Abbey is “telling cocoa farmers” amid widespread frustration, insisting that instead of rhetoric, the CEO should “find money and pay them.

His comment comes amid a deepening payment crisis in Ghana’s cocoa sector, where thousands of cocoa farmers across the country have reported delays in receiving full and timely payment for beans delivered to COCOBOD. Industry groups and farmer associations have called on the government and COCOBOD to expedite outstanding payments and implement reforms to sustain incomes and protect livelihoods.

Dr. Abbey has publicly acknowledged that COCOBOD is under severe financial strain with legacy debts and negative equity, and has apologised to farmers for delays while urging patience as the board and government work to resolve the situation.
