Young Cocoa Farmers Cry Out: Gov’t Urged To Reopen Cocoa Purchasing Season

The Young Cocoa Farmers Association of Ghana has expressed deep disappointment and frustration over the handling of the 2025/2026 cocoa season, calling on President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene.
In a statement signed by Convener Martin Adu, the association revealed that many young cocoa farmers have harvested and dried their cocoa beans, but are unable to sell them due to a lack of buyers.
The cocoa season was partially closed in December 2025, leaving farmers with unsold beans and no source of income. The association is urging the government to reopen the cocoa purchasing season to allow farmers to sell their produce.
The statement also cautioned against a proposed reduction in the cocoa price from GHS 3,625 to GHS 2,800, warning that it would discourage young people from entering cocoa farming and lead to abandoned farms being converted for illegal mining.
“The situation is gradually destroying our hope and confidence in cocoa farming,” the statement read. “If this continues, many young people will lose interest in cocoa farming entirely.”
The association is urging the government to take swift action to protect cocoa farmers, sustain youth interest in agriculture, and safeguard the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry.
