NPP Primaries: Bryan Acheampong factor reduced Bawumia’s winning percentage – Dr. Samuel Afriyie

Lecturer at Kumasi Technical University (KSTU), Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has attributed the reduction in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s winning percentage in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries to what he described as the “Bryan Acheampong factor.”

Speaking on Kessben FM in an interview with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Dr. Afriyie noted that although Bawumia emerged victorious in the just-ended Saturday primaries with 56%, his percentage declined compared to the 2023 primaries, where he secured 61% of the vote.

According to Dr. Afriyie, the presence and political positioning of Bryan Acheampong reshaped delegate alignments and voter dynamics within the party, resulting in a more competitive contest and a reduced percentage. He explained that internal party influences and shifting loyalties played a significant role in narrowing the gap.

Dr. Afriyie stressed that while Bawumia’s victory remains decisive, the change in numbers reflects evolving power structures within the NPP rather than a loss of overall support.
