Introduce buses to curb overcharging by Trotro operators – Elder Agyenim Boateng

A lecturer at the Presbyterian University, Elder Agyenim Boateng, has called for the introduction of city buses in Kumasi and other major towns as a practical solution to the problem of overcharging by commercial drivers, popularly known as Trotro operators.

Speaking on Kessben FM with Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD), Elder Agyenim Boateng noted that the current transportation system leaves passengers vulnerable to arbitrary fare increases, especially during peak hours or bad weather.

He explained that the absence of a structured and affordable public bus system gives trotro drivers and their mates room to exploit commuters. “Sometimes, passengers are charged almost double the usual fare without any justification. If city buses are introduced and properly managed, it will bring fairness and stability to transport fares,” he stated.

Elder Boateng further emphasized that a reliable bus system would not only ensure affordability but also help reduce congestion, improve road safety, and support environmental sustainability. He urged the government, metropolitan assemblies, and private investors to collaborate in implementing an efficient urban transport plan modeled after successful systems in other countries.
