Political parties must be more than election-winning machines – Asiedu Nketiah

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged African political parties to put more effort into creating long-lasting institutions that support efficient governance rather than just winning elections.

He said during the 2025 African Political Parties Summit in Accra that putting short-term electoral gains ahead of good governance is destroying public confidence and hurting the advancement of the continent.

Mr. Nketiah made the case in a speech that struck a chord with leaders of several African countries that a transactional approach to politics, in which authority is pursued for short-term or personal benefit.

“We’ve acknowledged that when politics becomes transactional, institutions suffer. When the long view is abandoned, the people’s trust erodes,” he stated.

He challenged political parties to see themselves as more than just “election-winning machines”.

“It must be enduring institutions that channel political competition into constructive governance, that provide the intellectual and policy foundations for economic transformation, and that embody the discipline, vision and moral leadership necessary for national progress,” He said.
