Volta Regional Minister Rallies Behind Homowo Peace Charity Cup: “The Cup Must Return to Volta”

The buzz around the 2025 Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Charity Cup continues to grow, with Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu throwing his full weight behind the event, and boldly backing Kpando Heart of Lions to clinch victory.

The charity match, set for Sunday, August 17, at the Accra Sports Stadium, will see Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak face off with the spirited Heart of Lions in a fixture that celebrates peace, unity, and tradition through football.

Lead organiser Samuel Anim Addo and his team recently paid a courtesy call on Hon. James Gunu, who warmly received them in the Volta Region.

Gunu revealed that his involvement was prompted by a call from Hon. Kofi Asamoah, and he wasted no time in lending his support to the cause.

“I believe football — and sports in general — is a powerful tool to engage the youth and bring communities together,” Gunu said.

“This match is not just about football; it’s an opportunity for the Volta Region to showcase our passion, our people, and our pride to the rest of Ghana and beyond.”

A self-professed football lover, Hon. Gunu didn’t shy away from a little friendly rivalry either.

With a broad smile, he threw down the gauntlet to Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, declaring that “the Cup is only visiting Accra briefly, it’s coming back home to Volta.”

Determined to make that prophecy a reality, Gunu promised to mobilise massive support from the Volta Region, even committing to arrange transportation to ensure fans can make the trip to the capital in full force.

“This is our moment. I’m going to lead the Lions, stand with them at the stadium, and give them everything they need to bring the trophy home,” he said with passion.

The Minister also praised the vision behind the event, lauding the Gbese Mantse and the organisers for using football as a platform to promote peace during the Homowo season, a time of celebration for the Ga people.

He ended the meeting with a symbolic gesture, decorating the visiting delegation with traditional sashes and pledging his unwavering support to ensure the event is a resounding success.

Gunu also expressed his eagerness to meet the Gbese Mantse in person at the stadium on match day.

The Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Charity Cup promises to be a thrilling encounter, blending football, culture, and a powerful message of unity, with both Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions ready to put on a show.
