NPP packed the courts with 176 appointments in 8 years, Mahama has only appointed 7, and what’s their headache ? – Felix Ofosu Kwakye

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State and spokesperson for the Presidency, reiterated on Kessben FM in Accra that during Nana Akufo‑Addo’s eight-year New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, a total of 176 judges were appointed to Ghana’s superior courts.

In stark contrast, under President John Mahama’s current administration, only seven appointments have been made to the bench so far.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, this large-scale appointment spree included judges across the High Court, Appeals Court, and Supreme Court—suggesting a deliberate effort by the NPP to bolster its influence in the judiciary.

In comparison, the Mahama administration has taken a more measured approach, making only seven judicial appointments to date, signaling a deliberate pivot from what they characterize as “court‑packing.”

Rapid appointments can lead to an influx of judges seen as politically aligned, eroding public confidence in the bench’s impartiality and damaging the judiciary’s credibility.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu contends that the NPP’s aggressive judicial appointments under Akufo‑Addo elevated partisan influence in Ghana’s courts.
