Dr. Samuel Afriyie criticizes premature endorsements of Bawumia by MPs, citing credibility concerns

Dr. Samuel Afriyie, a respected lecturer and political analyst, has expressed concerns over the early declarations of support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by some Members of Parliament (MPs) within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, Dr. Afriyie questioned the timing and strategic implications of these endorsements, particularly in light of the recent announcement of the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.
According to Dr. Afriyie, while the endorsements may be part of a broader political strategy, they also raise serious questions about the credibility and impartiality of the MPs involved. He explained that making such endorsements so early in the internal electoral process may limit the MPs’ flexibility and create tension among constituents who may support other aspirants within the party.
The NPP recently disclosed the dates for its parliamentary primaries, setting the stage for a competitive internal election season. As the race for the party’s flagbearership intensifies, several MPs have come out to openly back Dr. Bawumia, who is widely seen as a front-runner.
However, Dr. Afriyie cautioned that such early commitments could backfire, especially if other qualified aspirants approach the same MPs for support in the future.
As the NPP moves closer to selecting its next presidential candidate, the spotlight remains on how party leaders and MPs navigate the fine line between loyalty and objectivity in a highly competitive political environment.
