Dr Kwasi Baffour Gyimah, a medical practitioner with the Asante Mampong Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, has advised creatives to consider the inclusion of doctors or clinical psychologists on their management teams.
Speaking in an interview with NY DJ on Y102.5FM in commemoration of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, Dr Gyimah highlighted the relevance of such professionals on the overall well-being of creatives.
Dr Gyimah revealed creatives were more likely to suffer from depression. This, he said, was due to societal pressures on them and their inability to create as expected of them sometimes.
“Creatives are more likely to be affected, especially when they are struggling to create. Imagine an artist who comes out with a Top 10 song during Christmas and is looking forward to topping it up with another banger for Easter, but fails at all attempts. He gets into a state of self-doubt, and the more this continues, he begins to lose interest and might fall into depression. This often becomes evident and affects their physical and emotional state.”
He underscored the relevance of proactive mental health care, urging creatives to ensure they have access to qualified medical professionals who can offer timely guidance and support.
“This is something all creatives must look into. You can’t neglect having a doctor or a clinical psychologist with you. You don’t need to have them by your side 24/7, but they should be people you can have access to anytime you feel there’s something wrong.”
He also responded to concerns about financial strength to keep these professionals on the team.
“Lack of financial capacity should not be an excuse. You could lose your career for going through a long phase of depression,” he said.
Dr Gyimah also shared information on how to avoid and deal with depression.
