Illegal Mining Allegation Unfair – Akonta Lawyer Blasts Minister’s Press Conference

Lawyer Adom Appiah, lead counsel for Akonta Mining Company, has raised concerns over the recent actions of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, regarding the company’s operations in the Samreboi enclave of the Western North Region.
Speaking via phone on the Maakye show, Lawyer Adom Appiah criticized the Minister’s directive to the Minerals Commission to immediately revoke Akonta Mining’s license, describing it as a violation of due process.
According to him, the Minister failed to allow Akonta Mining the opportunity to respond to the allegations before holding a public press conference to accuse the company of illegal mining activities.
The Minister’s directive follows reports that Akonta Mining and its associates were engaged in serious illegal mining operations within a forest reserve in Samreboi.
However, Lawyer Appiah firmly denied these accusations, stating that Akonta Mining had no association with individuals purportedly operating illegally under the company’s name. He insisted that the authorities should arrest any individuals found culpable.
Further defending Akonta Mining’s activities, Lawyer Adom Appiah revealed that the company had even undertaken rehabilitation efforts, including the planting of coconut trees in some concession areas legally allocated to them.
He emphasized that Akonta Mining has remained committed to environmental conservation within its permitted zones.
