NDC strategically shifted its focus to younger voters in the region – Dr. Frank Amoakohene Explains NDC’s Historic numbers in Ashanti Region
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shed light on the factors behind the party’s massive victory in the Ashanti Region during this year’s elections.
Responding to KOD, the host of Maakye, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of adapting to the changing needs of the people.
“The needs of the people evolve, so as a political leader, you must evolve your policies to address their concerns. At the end of the day, no matter what you do, you may still fall short of satisfying everyone,” he explained.
Referencing historical political shifts, Dr. Amoakohene stated how Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence, faced criticism.
One of the NDC’s winning strategies, he revealed, was actively listening to the people’s grievances and crafting solutions tailored to their problems.
Dr. Amoakohene noted that signs of the NPP’s decline were evident following the 2020 elections. “If you analyze Ghana’s electoral trends since 1992, governments typically perform better in their second terms. This was not the case for the NPP,” he stated.
He addressed the NPP’s complacency in the Ashanti Region. “The NPP assumed their 500,000-vote lead over the NDC in 2020 was unbeatable. But what they didn’t realize was that only 250,000 people needed to change their minds to close that gap.”
Dr. Amoakohene also explained how the NDC strategically shifted its focus to younger voters in the region. “The older generation views loyalty to the NPP as part of their doctrine.
So, we targeted the youth, knowing they were open to new ideas and change. Many in the Ashanti Region had never truly heard the NDC’s message before, partly because of fear; ”Even wearing an NDC T-shirt was seen as a risk,” he said.
He concluded that literally, the NDC was able to build a strong foothold in the NPP’s stronghold, ultimately leading to its historic success in the region.
