NDC Proposes Credit Scheme to Empower Fisherfolk
In a bid to bolster the livelihoods of Ghana’s fishing communities, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled, as part of its manifesto policy, a comprehensive credit scheme aimed at supporting fisherfolk across the nation.
Dr. Bernadette Naa Hoffman, the Coastal and Inland Campaign Project Team Leader for the NDC, made this known during her recent engagements with artisanal fishermen, fishmongers, and other stakeholders at the Tema Newtown Fishing Harbour and Kpone Kantamaso in the Greater Accra Region.
Speaking at the events, Dr. Naa Hoffman detailed the key features of the proposed scheme, which will offer flexible microloans tailored to the needs of those involved in the fisheries value chain. “We understand the financial burdens that fisher-folks face,” she said. “We plan to provide loans that are not only accessible but also interest-free if repaid within the agreed tenor. This will allow us to circulate funds effectively, enabling more fishers to expand their businesses.”
The credit scheme is designed to address the unique challenges faced by the fishing sector, where many players struggle to secure necessary financing for equipment and operations. By offering the credit, the NDC aims to reduce the financial pressure on fishers, allowing them to invest in their livelihoods without the crippling weight of high-interest debt.
In addition to the credit initiative, Dr. Naa Hoffman also announced NDC’s plans to open the National Women’s Bank. This institution would provide loans at reduced interest rates specifically for women in business, empowering them to grow their enterprises and contribute to their communities and to the national economic growth.
During her address, Dr. Naa Hoffman critiqued the current administration’s handling of fishing industry resources, highlighting how political affiliations have influenced the distribution of essential inputs, such as premix fuel. “Under the current system, the ruling party members are controlling access to these resources, which should be fairly distributed among all fishers,” she stated. “If elected, the NDC will ensure that premix fuel, outboard motors, and other vital resources are allocated directly to fisheries organizations, which can then distribute them equitably to their members.”
She also reiterated the NDC’s commitment to prioritize the needs of the fisher-folks. We are dedicated to ensuring that all stakeholders in the fisheries value chain can earn a sustainable income to support their families,” she said.
The engagement events reflect the NDC’s ongoing efforts to connect with Ghana’s coastal and inland fishing communities, aiming to enhance the well-being of fishers and foster economic growth in this vital sector. As the elections approach, the NDC is actively seeking to solidify its support among these communities by addressing their pressing concerns and proposing tangible solutions for their challenges.
