Accra’s Recurring Floods Demand Long-Term Action – Nana Frimpong Ziega

The political commentator Nana Frimpong Ziega has urged the government to prioritize flood prevention instead of responding after disasters strike.
Speaking on Kessben TV following the recent floods in the Greater Accra Region, he called for greater accountability and a new strategy to tackle the recurring crisis.
Ziega said flooding persists because buildings continue to be constructed in waterways and flood-prone areas while planning regulations are poorly enforced. He also cited past warnings from the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, which reportedly identified some locations as unsuitable for development, but said those warnings have largely been ignored.
He added that rapid urban development and the loss of green spaces have weakened Accra’s natural drainage system. Ziega also blamed some local officials for approving building permits in restricted areas, worsening the city’s flood risk.
According to Ziega, governments have promised lasting solutions for years, yet devastating floods return almost every rainy season. He urged authorities to invest in improved drainage, better urban planning, environmental protection, and stricter enforcement of building regulations to help prevent future disasters and protect lives and property.
