16,000 health workers to be recruited in 2026 – Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the government intends to recruit 16,000 health workers in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s health workforce and improve service delivery.

He mentioned that the recruitment process for about 8,000 of these positions has already been completed, with additional recruitment expected.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual Health Summit in Accra on Tuesday, June 9, Mr. Akandoh emphasized the government’s commitment to deploying health workers to underserved areas as part of broader efforts to address staffing gaps in the health sector. “In 2025 alone, over 14,000 health workers were added to the government payroll. This year, we plan to recruit an additional 16,000 healthcare workers, with recruitment for approximately 8,000 already complete. We are focusing on strengthening deployments to underserved areas,” he stated.

Additionally, Mr. Akandoh highlighted progress in assigning medical doctors to underserved regions, noting a significant improvement compared to previous years. “In 2024, only 12 medical doctors accepted postings to eight underserved regions. However, in 2026, we successfully placed 100 doctors in these same regions, and we are not finished yet,” he added.
