Ghana launches E-Visa platform to boost travel efficiency and security-Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the launch of Ghana’s new electronic visa (e-visa) system, describing it as a major step in modernising the country’s immigration processes while strengthening national security.

Speaking at the launch on Africa Day, May 25, President Mahama said the initiative builds on reforms already introduced under his administration to improve travel and mobility into Ghana.

According to him, the e-visa platform will allow travellers from around the world to apply for visas entirely online by uploading supporting documents electronically, making secure digital payments, and receiving travel authorisation directly through email and mobile devices.

“This initiative is not merely about convenience; it is equally about efficiency, transparency, accountability, and security,” Mahama stated.

The President explained that the new platform is fully integrated into Ghana’s Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API/PNR) architecture and linked to international crime and watch-list databases to enable comprehensive background checks before visas are approved.

He stressed that Ghana’s welcoming posture to visitors should not be mistaken for a compromise on security.

“Let no one misunderstand Ghana’s openness and hospitality as a relaxation of our national security obligations. While Ghana will continue to warmly welcome citizens from across the world, every entry into the republic will remain subject to stringent security screening and established immigration protocols,” he said.

Mahama noted that the launch of the initiative on Africa Day carries symbolic significance, adding that Ghana remains committed to the ideals of Pan-Africanism and greater continental integration.

“It is fitting that we launch this initiative on Africa Day, the 25th of May. On this day, we are not merely unveiling a digital visa platform, we are reaffirming Ghana’s historic commitment to Pan-Africanism,” he added.
