Seven medical staff sanctioned over the avoidable death of Charles Amissah

Seven health professionals have been sanctioned following investigations into the death of Charles Amissah, who reportedly died after failing to receive timely emergency medical care despite being in a life-threatening condition.
The disciplinary action follows the findings of an independent committee set up by Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the report, Amissah survived the initial road accident and was transported to the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and later Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. However, investigators found that he did not receive urgent life-saving interventions such as bleeding control, blood transfusion, or adequate stabilization.
The committee concluded that Amissah died from excessive blood loss, describing the case as a preventable death caused by medical neglect and systemic failures in emergency care.
The sanctioned individuals include doctors and nurses from the affected hospitals who were found to have failed in their professional responsibilities during the emergency response process.
Authorities say further reforms are expected to improve emergency healthcare delivery and ensure accountability within medical institutions.
