President Mahama Launches Free Primary Healthcare as ISD Digital Vans Stream Event Nationwide
New LED vans bring live broadcast of Dodowa launch to markets and lorry stations across Ghana, sparking public excitement

President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the Free Primary Healthcare initiative on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the Shai Osudoku Municipal Hospital in Dodowa, signaling a major shift in Ghana’s health policy from “sick care” to preventive healthcare.
The social intervention, a key pledge of the Mahama administration, aims to eliminate financial barriers and accelerate Ghana’s progress toward universal health coverage. Addressing stakeholders, health personnel, media, and residents gathered at the launch, President Mahama reiterated government’s commitment to investing in a system that keeps citizens healthy before illness strikes.
As the ceremony unfolded in Dodowa, the Information Services Department took the message nationwide in real time. ISD’s new LED Digital Vans broadcast the launch live to vantage points across all regions.
From lorry stations in the Ahafo Region to Kotokuraba Market in the Central Region, Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, and communities in the Upper East Region, traders, drivers, and passersby paused to watch the President’s address on the mobile screens.
The live broadcast drew immediate reactions. Many viewers expressed excitement at the initiative, while others praised the administration and asked ISD officers on-site for details. Officers used the opportunity to explain the basics of Free Primary Healthcare and confirmed that wider public education campaigns would follow.
The initiative is designed to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme by removing out-of-pocket costs for primary-level services. For citizens who watched the broadcast while going about their daily business, the message was clear: government intends to ease the cost burden of basic care.
The launch marks one of the first large-scale deployments of ISD’s LED Digital Vans for live government programming, bringing policy directly to markets, transport hubs, and street corners nationwide.
