GNAPS Calls on WAEC to Reverse BECE Registration Fee Hike

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) is urging the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reverse its decision to increase the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration fee by 24.24% from GHC 282.35 in 2025 to GHC 350.82 in 2026.
In a statement released on December 11, 2025, GNAPS described the hike as “insensitive” and “unilateral”, saying it would curtail the educational progress of hundreds of BECE candidates from private schools across the country.
“We call on WAEC to immediately halt the intended BECE registration fee increase and initiate an urgent, broad-based stakeholder engagement involving GNAPS to objectively determine a fair, equitable, and justifiable amount to be paid by candidates,” said Mr. Kennedy Donkor, General Secretary of GNAPS.
The statement, signed by Mr. Kennedy Donkor, General Secretary of GNAPS, urges the Ministry of Education and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to intervene and ensure that the fee hike is reversed.
GNAPS argues that the increase is “economically indefensible” and “deeply troubling”, especially given the current stability of national economic indicators, including inflation and the cost of goods and services.
The association warns that the excessive fee adjustment undermines the ability of hardworking parents to meet examination costs and jeopardizes the enrolment and retention of Ghanaian children who may be forced out of school due to unaffordable registration fees.
GNAPS is ready to dialogue with WAEC and other stakeholders to reverse the fee increase and ensure that the welfare of the child remains supreme.
