2026 Mid-Year Budget: Accra-Kumasi expressway set for construction as gov’t completes project preparations- Ato Forson
The government has announced that preparations for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway have reached an advanced stage, with major project requirements being completed ahead of the commencement of works.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, described the 176-kilometre six-lane expressway as the flagship project under the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
He said the project is expected to significantly transform road transportation between Ghana’s two major cities by reducing travel time to about two hours, improving road safety, easing congestion and lowering transport costs.
Dr. Forson disclosed that as of July 22, 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces had cleared 122 kilometres of the project corridor, representing about 70 per cent of the required right of way, within 12 weeks.
He added that the entire corridor is expected to be cleared by the first week of September 2026, while compensation assessments, environmental studies, engineering designs and feasibility works are progressing simultaneously.
According to the Finance Minister, detailed engineering design and feasibility studies are expected to be completed by the end of August 2026, with procurement for the main construction contract scheduled to begin in September.
He further revealed that government has secured the financial resources needed for the project, with US$1.7 billion deposited into a dedicated Accra-Kumasi Expressway account at the Bank of Ghana.
“The funds have been ring-fenced and will only be used after the main construction contract is awarded,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.
The project will feature modern interchanges, bridges, intelligent transport systems, electronic tolling, emergency response facilities and rest stops.
Dr. Forson expressed confidence that all requirements for the transformational road project, including financing and technical preparations, would be completed before President John Dramani Mahama cuts the sod for construction to begin.
