Club Football: The best ever squad in the history of Ghana is Asante Kotoko’s 1982 squad – Ernest Appau

Former Asante Kotoko defender Ernest Appau has stirred conversations in the Ghanaian football community with bold claims about the legendary 1992 Kotoko team. Speaking during an interview on Kessben TV with Tony Muntana, Appau described the 1992 squad as “the best club team ever in the history of Ghana football.”
Appau, a key member of that iconic side, reminisced about the quality, depth, and dominance of the 1992 team. According to him, the team possessed a rare blend of technical prowess, tactical intelligence, and individual brilliance that made them unmatched at the time.
“If we’re being honest, the 1992 Kotoko team was the greatest club side Ghana has ever seen,” he stated passionately. “We had everything—talent, experience, and drive—but we lacked unity, and that was our downfall.”
Kotoko’s 1992 team came agonizingly close to winning the African Champions League (then known as the African Cup of Champions Clubs). However, despite their quality, internal conflicts and a lack of cohesion among players ultimately cost them the title.
Appau did not shy away from identifying the root of their shortfall. “There was disunity in the team. We weren’t together off the pitch, and it affected us on the field when it mattered most,” he admitted.
Interestingly, Appau contrasted the 1992 squad with the Kotoko team that followed in 1993. While perhaps less celebrated in terms of individual talent, the 1993 side achieved what their predecessors could not—winning the CAF Champions League.
“The 1993 team may not have had the star power of 1992, but they had something we didn’t—unity,” Appau acknowledged. “They were one family, and that’s what made the difference.”
His remarks have sparked lively debate among fans and pundits, many of whom still hold the 1992 team in high regard. The squad featured some of Ghana’s finest footballers of the era and remains a nostalgic symbol of Kotoko’s enduring legacy in African football.
