NDC was right by sitting at Majority side – Kofi Akpaloo

The Presidential Candidate of the  Liberal Party of Ghana(LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo has asserted that the decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus to sit on the right side of the Speaker was the right thing to do.

During an interview on Kingdom FM, Kofi Akpaloo explained that the exit of some members from the NPP, automatically makes them the minority of the chamber without the speaker saying so, hence he finds nothing wrong with the NDC caucus taking over the majority side.

“NPP has lost 2 MPs and NDC has also lost 1 MP which means the NDC is now more than the NPP in parliament so it makes them the majority”.

“So if the NDC’s are majority then it is okay for them to sit at the right side of the chamber. So I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the NDC going to sit at the majority side.” He argued.

Kofi Akpaloo further explained that if the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin had made a U-turn on his ruling based on the ruling of the Supreme Court, then the NPP caucus had every right to claim the Majority side.

The Minority’s decision, led by its leadership, comes as Parliament reconvenes for a much-anticipated session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

This move heightened political tensions between the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as both groups compete for control of the Chamber amidst a slew of legal and political challenges.

The Minority’s intention to occupy the Majority’s seats is interpreted as a response to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s recent verdict, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant on October 17, effectively decreasing the NPP’s numbers and shifting the balance of power in favor of the NDC.
