Over $3million paid to GBC for coverage of African Games – Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif

The government paid the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) more than US$3 million to broadcast the 2023 All African Games, according to revelations made by Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports.
The public broadcaster aired live coverage of the 13th African Games, which took place in Ghana from March 8 to March 23, 2024, over a period of 15 days.

On Monday, August 19, 2024, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Sam George questioned the Sports Minister on the precise sum that GTV charged for covering the games during a Public Accounts Committee meeting.

“GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th African Games, and we can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC. “I can’t recall the exact amount, but I know it exceeds US$3 million.” Mustapha Ussif responded to the committee.

Sam George has promised to look into GBC representatives more thoroughly when they come before the Committee.

The development of facilities for the 2023 African Games was funded by US$195 million from the Ghanaian government. For the athletes and officials from the participating nations, the state also supplied lodging and meals.

At the 2023 African Games, Ghana won 69 medals in all.
