Heavy Security in Ayawaso East Ahead of Polls — Francis Ahovi Raises Alarm Over Motorbike Vigilantes

Story: Maurice Otoo

Security Expert Francis Ahovi has revealed that there is a heavy security presence in Ayawaso East, suggesting that the Police may have already gathered intelligence pointing to potential unrest in the area.

According to him, the enclave is highly volatile and can easily descend into violence with the least provocation.

Speaking on electoral security concerns via zoom on Kessben TV’s Digest, Ahovi noted that a significant number of crimes recorded in the country are linked to motorbike riders. He therefore cautioned political actors against the display of large groups of motorbike riders during elections, warning that such actions heighten tensions and create fear among residents.

He stressed that it would be “analogically weak” to blame the Electoral Commission for electoral violence, arguing that the responsibility largely lies with political actors and security enforcement.

“If the Police are proactive, they can prevent electoral violence before it escalates,” he stated.

“However, the issue depends largely on the conduct of politicians.”

Ahovi further called for an immediate clampdown on vigilante groups who brand themselves with numerous motorbikes, claiming that such groups often use the bikes to perpetrate violence during political activities.

Referencing incidents in neighbouring countries such as Togo, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, he warned that Ghana must not allow similar patterns of politically motivated violence to take root.

He urged stakeholders to prioritise peace and ensure that elections remain free, fair and devoid of intimidation.
