85% of the Kumasi Central Prisoners are youth – PRO of Kumasi Central Prison, Sergeant George Owusu

The Public Relations Officer of Kumasi Central Prison, Sergeant George Owusu, has revealed that a significant majority of inmates at the facility are young people.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Sergeant Owusu disclosed that about 85 percent of prisoners at the Kumasi Central Prison fall within the youth bracket. He described the figure as worrying and called for urgent interventions to address the rising number of young offenders in the country.
According to him, the trend reflects broader social challenges, including unemployment, peer pressure, and limited access to education and skills training. He emphasized the need for stakeholders to invest in youth development programs to help curb criminal activities among young people.
Sergeant Owusu further highlighted the importance of rehabilitation, noting that the prison continues to provide vocational training and reformative programs aimed at equipping inmates with employable skills upon their release.
He urged parents, community leaders, and government agencies to play a more active role in guiding the youth and creating opportunities that would steer them away from crime.
