District assembly aspirants are suing the Electoral Commission chair for financial loss after district assembly elections were postponed.
The EC has deliberately misused state finance and cost us a lot of money, the aspirants Yaa Pokuah and Ahmed Iddrissu, from the Adwumakaase Kese and Moshi Zongo electoral areas repectively explained to Kessben Television.
“If Afari Gyan says due to the cancellation of the district assembly elections the EC has incurred debt so he should be given additional GH¢90 million, then we the aspirants and assembly members have also incurred huge debts as well,” Mr Iddrissu said.
Ahmed Iddrissu further explained that they have filed their case at the Kumasi Appeal Court and will be going to court on Wednesday, 25th March, for the hearing. He added that some lawyers are helping them free of charge and called on other aspirants to join their fight.
The EC was given GH¢317 million to organize the elections on March 3 but the Commission was, on February 27, directed by the Supreme Court to cancel all preparations towards the elections and start everything afresh.
Sources say the EC boss informed MPs that his outfit requested for GH¢327 million to conduct the elections, but had so far been given just GH¢317 million.
The EC would need an addition amount of GH¢90 million for their operations to ensure the smooth conduct of the district assembly elections, Dr Afari Gyan told Parliament.
