NDC foot soldiers lock up party office in Kumasi

A battle to control the Ashanti Regional NDC Party Headquarters at Amakom today resulted in a stand-off between the regional chairman, Mr Yaw Obimpeh, on one side and a group of activists calling themselves the Baashakar boys.
It all started when the Baashakar boys put the main iron gates to the office under lock and key because of some misunderstanding between them and the Regional Chairman who they are accusing of being dictator.
The siege was to create the impression that they were in charge and that the chairman was not fit to occupy the high party office.
However, moments after the Baashakar boys had sealed off the place, Mr Obimpeh, seething with anger, arrived with a saw and sledge hammer to break the locks and gain entry.
The drama attracted a huge crowd who were bemused. This is happening at a time when the NDC has embarked on a campaign to win one million votes in Ashanti, the stronghold of its rival, the National Patriotic Party.
The angry supporters claim the regional executives of the party are sabotaging President John Mahama.
Ashanti regional minister, Samuel Sarpong, was called to the party’s office.
About 40 policemen were at the scene to ensure calm and order.
